Living in Massachusetts on Cape Cod and in South Coast towns, I was introduced to Scrimshaw just as a child is introduced to language. The area was immersed in history of whaling and this ancient art of the mariner. Whale ships sailed from Nantucket and New Bedford until 1924, although the golden age had ended many years before, in 1856 after petroleum was discovered.
Sooner or later I had to try my hand at it and I have been fortunate enough to continue the art as my full time profession for 30 plus years. My work is in fine gift shops and catalogs across the United States.
